Drugs and Society Learning Journal Entry Mod. 3

In this section, I have learned about drug use, laws, and regulations as well as how and why drugs work. I have learned about the process of how the FDA regulates the manufacturing of medical grade drugs through pre-clinical research and development, clinical research and human testing, marketing, and post-marketing surveillance. In addition to this, about how various drug abuse laws are tied into these prescription drugs. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) formed in 1973, acts opposite the FDA to help regulate the second hand drug use and distribution. They help enforce laws such as the Comprehensive Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Act (1970), the Drug Addiction Treatment Act (2000), and the Secure and Responsible Drug Disposal Act (2010).

Drugs are scheduled into different classes based on dependence, medical effectiveness and usefulness, and safety. These, combined with factors in controlling drug abuse such as supply reduction strategy, demand reduction strategy, and the inoculation strategy, are used by drug courts to help addicts and users. We have discussed in the discussion forums about various treatment methods such as methadone and the validity of drug laws and what possibly can be changed.

In addition to this, I learned how drugs work and how they effect the body. Toxicity, drug interactions, and antagonistic as well as potentiative affects all play factors of the drugs effect on the body. Drugs can effect people in different ways and can effect people differently depending on the way the drug is administered (eg. oral or intravenously). These drugs can lead to various effects such as a physical or psychological addiction. Some drugs such as heroin and alcohol, have higher potential for both forms of addiction as opposed to something such as marijuana or LSD. These drugs can also create a tolerance in the body leading to the need for more amounts of the drug to cause the same effects as it did before. This is very dangerous as it could easily lead to overdose.

In this module we have also participated in various discussion. I feel that I have put a sufficient amount of time and research into my question and responses to create a more interesting and thought provoking environment for this and future discussions. Having feedback from my peers and my professor is very helpful, and I have used it to use more resources in my discussion. After reading the summary, right now I am uncertain about how I am going to tackle the research paper for the next module. Hopefully through my research and our group discussion I will come up with an interesting and thought provoking topic.

If I were to provide additional suggestions for someone during this module, I would say more thought and research should be put into the discussion questions. While some people provide basic information (a question and resources) I feel more thought and critical thinking could be added.

Lastly, one resource I have found helpful to paint a better picture of our drug and society culture is https://www.drugabuse.gov/drugs-abuse/commonly-abused-drugs-charts
