Drugs and Society Learning Journal Entry Mod. 5

In this module, chapters 6, 7, and 8, we learned about CNS depressants and alcohol as well as the dangers such substances can cause. The chapter that I felt I related to the most was 7 and 8, or the chapters on alcohol. The reason for this is I have witnessed many people who are close to me, including friends and family, have their lives destroyed by alcohol. I learned about the different types of alcoholics including the functional subtype as well as the chronic sever subtype. This helped make a clearer picture and I was able to related these types to the people around me and was able to better understand their condition and situation. The mini-lecture helped shed light on the depressants, giving statistical information on depression which could explain why some people lean towards substance abuse. In our discussions we talked more upon the topics of depressants and alcohol, as well as other topics such as cocaine, and other drugs. We discussed the dangers of such, as well as mixing of the two, known as polydrug use. Polydrug use can be extremely dangerous and if the right substances are mixed, even deadly. The online supplemental resources helped to provide additional information and statistics as well as an outside opinion on the matter to help provide more insight on the situations.

As we have now reached the half point in the semester, I feel it is important that I do more reading as well as research on the topics at hand, as not only could this improve my grade, but also provide me with invaluable knowledge about how drugs can effect our society. I feel compared to the first module, my participation in the discussions has improved. This is because instead of posting short, generic responses, I now take the time to read and think about my comment as well as provide additional information from not only our book but online resources as well. I feel this is best when trying to create a healthy and thought provoking discussion environment. So far, my discussion questions have been 5 points and I feel I have made a conscience effort to put a well structured, informational, and thought provoking discussion question, as well as my comments.
