Drugs and Society Learning Journal Entry Mod. 7
During this final module, which included chapters 15 on OTC/prescription drugs, as well as chapter 18 on treating drug dependence, I have learned many things. In chapter 15 we learned about the abuse of OTC and prescription drugs and the federal regulation of these substances. NSAID's anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin, acetaminophen, and ibuprofen. In addition to this, the effects of certain allergy medications such as decongestants and their use in the production of harder narcotics such as methamphetamine. We also learned about herbal drugs and their various effectiveness. We learned about drug abuse of certain steroids as well as stimulants and antidepressants. In chapter 18 we learned about the treatment for drug abuse. We learned about the assessment of drug addiction as well as the 13 principles that characterize effective addiction treatment. We learned about the historical approach to drug treatment programs such as AA or alcoholic anonymous as well as short vs. long term treatment strategies.
We also learned valuable things from our discussion such as the effectiveness of drug treatment programs, herbal vs. prescription drugs, prescription drug abuse, comorbidity, and OTC drug commercials. In our online readings and supplementary materials we learned about how dangerous opiate addiction can be.
For this final module one thing I learned that may be helpful in the future is how I learned how dangerous prescription drugs can really be. You have a belief in your mind because it was prescribed by a doctor, and how it is supposed to be medicine for those who need it, its not very harmful. However, power narcotic drugs like hydrocodone and oxycodone can be even more powerful than heroin and has been the main cause for drug overdoses in the past decade. What I feel impacted me most on this, being my first online course, was how helpful my professors comments on our discussions and paper were. This provided invaluable feedback on my own work and allowed me to continually improve my writings throughout the semester in not just this class but others as well. The discussions were very engaging and intuitive. The most difficult thing about this course was, being an online class, it can be easy to forget when your work is due or to check your work so it was very important to always stay on top and up to date with my assignments. Overall I thought this was a great course and enjoyed learning about various topics and participating in discussions.
